After checking some of the capital’s exciting new bars for the first time during London Cocktail Week, I decided to pay them a second visit in calmer circumstances. Ryan “Mr.Lyan” Chetiyawardana’s Dandelyan hit the headlines recently when it was awarded World’s Best Cocktail Bar at Tales of the Cocktail Spirited Awards 2017, but a quieter place to grab a Mr.Lyan concoction is his Super Lyan hangout in Hoxton. Previously the basement of the innovative White Lyan, Super Lyan is a simpler drinking den with a fun and friendly cocktail menu. There are nitro espresso martinis on tap, Clover Clubs with Guinness in, and a slushy machine for emergencies. Our standout drinks were a Bloodshot Negroni that made use of Old Forester bourbon and beef tea, and a dangerously drinkable combination of Dewar’s 12 scotch, Del Maguey Vida mezcal and Ancho Reyes chile liqueur called Man on Fire. It’s the perfect place to grab a drink before an evening at sister restaurant Cub one floor up, but be warned – you might never make it back upstairs for your reservation.
