Decent Mexican food has long been something than London foodies have bemoaned a lack of, but those in the know have been stuffing their faces with Breddos Tacos at Netil Market and Street Feast since 2011. Six years on from their first appearance, spurred on by successful kitchen residencies and a colourful cookbook, the Breddos boys (Nud Dudhia and Chris Whitney) have finally found a site to call home in Clerkenwell. And they’ve brought mezcal.
It’s a lively space, with an open kitchen for showing off their painstaking methods. It’s not often that you see the word nixtamalised on a menu, referring to the corn preparation, but they are rightly proud of their superior tacos and tostadas. The menu changes regularly, so keep your eyes peeled for octopus tostadas, pigs head tacos, arbol chile pepper crab, queso fundido (all the cheese) and more. You can’t go far wrong though. The flavours tend to be full on, so be sure to order a margarita or one of their many mezcals to cut through the punchy salsas and vinaigrettes. And save some space for a tres leches ice cream taco or two.
Breddos is an instant hit, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see them expand before the end of 2017. Much like London buses, three top taco places have come along at once with Neil Rankin’s Temper in Soho and El Pastor in Borough (from the folk behind Barrafina) joining the party. Hopefully Santo Remedio will also find a new home this year. Either way, we can’t complain about a lack’o’tacos any longer!
